Gary Dranow
Gary Dranow is a multifaceted artist whose life story weaves together the worlds of athletics, entrepreneurship, and music into a narrative defined by reinvention, resilience, and creativity. Born on March 10, 1954 in Santa Monica, California, Gary demonstrated an adventurous spirit from an early age. He first competed in equine events between the ages of 9 and 12. At 14 he began riding motorcycles and racing motocross, and by 15 he had already won his first motocross race. At 16 he became a winning expert motocross racer. That same year he discovered skiing, and by 17 he was a certified ski instructor at Snow Summit Ski Area. Over the next four years he taught primarily advanced students, and during his second year of teaching he earned the highest score ever recorded on the Associated Instructors exam.
Gary’s passion for skiing continued to evolve into racing. He began in the Snow Summit Night League and finished second overall in his second year. He went on to become a USSA certified race coach, and from 1980 to 1990 he coached recreational racers while heading up the Ski Racing Department at Snow Summit. Between 1988 and 1995 he competed in Coors Pro races, qualifying for the main draw six times. These experiences solidified his reputation as both a skilled competitor and a highly respected coach.
Beyond athletics, Gary embraced entrepreneurship with the same passion that fueled his competitive drive. He launched a clothing line, ran a mortgage brokerage, and developed an automated mortgage software system called Cyborg Information Systems. Each venture reflected his ability to innovate, adapt, and lead. His move to Park City in 1998 marked not only a new chapter in business and sport but also a turning point that reconnected him with his lifelong love for music.
Music has been a constant presence in Gary’s life since he was 11 years old. His journey as a musician began when he first heard “Crossroads” by Cream on the radio, a moment that inspired him to pick up the guitar and form his first band, The New Invaderz. Influenced by legendary artists such as Eric Clapton, Jimi Hendrix, Stevie Ray Vaughan, and B.B. King, Gary developed a distinctive blues rock sound that is both soulful and emotionally charged. His guitar work and songwriting became a means of storytelling, blending personal experience with broader social themes.
After rediscovering a collection of analog tapes recorded in the 1990s, Gary released his debut album Destiny Road in May 2023. The project reintroduced timeless material through remastered tracks, capturing the essence of his earlier musical vision while presenting it to a new generation of listeners. Since then, Gary has continued to release singles and albums that reflect his dynamic range and his commitment to using music as both art and advocacy. His powerful anthem The Cry of War, released in 2023, voiced support for Ukraine’s fight for democracy and earned radio play in Ukraine, while his forthcoming double album Never Give Up brings together rock, EDM, and socially conscious storytelling in collaboration with international musicians including Chris Zoupa and Ukrainian producer Klim Apalkov.
Today, Gary performs livestream concerts every Monday night from 6 PM to 8 PM Mountain Time with his Park City band. The lineup includes Bob Smith on drums, Andy Evans on bass, Scooter Keyes on keyboards, and Darrell Shannon handling sound, live chat, and backing vocals. These livestreamed performances allow Gary and his band to connect directly with a global audience in real time, combining the intimacy of live music with the accessibility of online platforms.
At its core, Gary Dranow’s artistry is about resilience, expression, and connection. His songs address themes such as mental health, personal struggle, and societal change, while also exploring imaginative narratives like his conceptual work The Masked Facade. Whether through heartfelt ballads, hard hitting anthems, or thought-provoking concept albums, Gary invites listeners into stories that resonate deeply on both personal and universal levels.
Gary Dranow’s journey from the motocross track to the ski slopes and from the boardroom to the recording studio is a testament to the power of embracing life’s many chapters. Today, he continues to evolve as a storyteller and performer, dedicated to making music that not only entertains but also inspires reflection and sparks conversation.
